Laurence Blyth is a conductor based on the Devon and Somerset border, England.

He works regular with choirs in Exeter, Exmouth and Wellington, and is in demand as a freelance conductor and choral clinician.

Laurence also provides choirs for weddings in Devon and Somerset.

Biography

Laurence Blyth is Musical Director of choral societies in Exeter, Exmouth and Wellington, and of the Somerset Community Foundation’s annual Sing for Somerset event in Wells Cathedral. He was also, until 2017, Musical Director of In Ecclesia, directing liturgical performances at venues including York Minster, Salisbury Cathedral and Bath Abbey.

Recent conducting highlights include Bach “Mass in B minor” at Exeter Cathedral (Chorus Master, English Touring Opera), Handel “Messiah”, and a massed-choirs performance of Vaughan Williams “A Sea Symphony”, also at Exeter Cathedral. Plans for 2018-19 include Mendelssohn “Elijah”, Bach “Magnificat” and “St Matthew Passion”, Haydn “The Seasons”, Vaughan Williams “Five Mystical Songs” and Howard Goodall “Eternal Light: A Requiem”.

Educated at Norwich School, Laurence Blyth read music at the University of Exeter and subsequently graduated with a master’s degree in choral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. At RWCMD his studies with Simon Halsey, Adrian Partington and Neil Ferris were supported by the Busenhart Morgan-Evans Foundation and the EMI Music Sound Foundation. He also conducted in masterclasses with Edward Caswell, Peter Broadbent, Sarah Tenant-Flowers, John Butt, Robert Dean and Eric Whitacre.
